Claremorris native and author Elizabeth Reapy has won the €10,000 Rooney Prize for Irish Literature 2017 for her debut novel Red Dirt. Red Dirt was published in June 2016 by Head of Zeus. The story takes place in Australia, telling the tales of three young Irish migrants escaping the collapsing economy at home. Surrounded by cheap drink and drugs, they make dangerous and impulsive choices — finding themselves in unfathomable situations.

Information, Education and Training Supports Expo in Claremorris

The Education and Training Working Group of the Mayo Local Community Development Committee are organising an Information, Education and Training Supports Expo in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, on Thursday, August 31, from 10am to 1.30pm. The aim of the Expo is to provide adults with information on the wide range of training and educational opportunities as well as information on the various supports and work placement programmes available to them. At the Expo there will also be workshops on self employment and returning to education and training.

Last week Claremorris Commnuity Radio held a graduation ceremony for its most recently completed media skills course. This particular course was open to anyone over the age of 55 and was funded by the Community Forum of Ireland, under the auspices of CRAOL, the Community Radio Forum.
